CASEWV Family Stabilization Program

The CASEWV Family Stabilization program is a vital resource for residents of Mercer, Monroe, and Summers counties in West Virginia. This program focuses on providing crucial support to families facing unexpected financial hardships. A key component of their services is emergency assistance with essential bills, made possible through Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funding. This assistance aims to help families maintain stability during times of crisis and prevent further financial strain.

Beyond direct financial aid, the Family Stabilization program acts as a gateway to a wider network of support. They offer referrals to other programs offered by CASEWV, ensuring individuals and families can access a full range of services tailored to their specific needs. This may include assistance with food, housing, employment, or other social services. Furthermore, the program connects clients with external agencies and resources within the community, maximizing the potential for comprehensive and long-term support.

In addition to financial assistance and referrals, the CASEWV Family Stabilization program also plays a crucial role in tax preparation. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, they offer free tax preparation services to eligible individuals and families. This valuable service helps community members navigate the complexities of tax filing, ensuring they receive all eligible deductions and credits, ultimately contributing to their financial well-being.

  • CSBG

CSBG (Community Services Block Grant) programs can help people with emergencies in a variety of ways, depending on the specific program and the needs of the individual or family. Here are some common examples:

Financial assistance: CSBG funds can be used to provide emergency financial assistance to help people with urgent needs like rent or mortgage payments to prevent eviction, and utility bills to avoid shutoff.

Housing assistance: In addition to rent/mortgage assistance, CSBG funds may support emergency shelters or temporary housing for people who are homeless or displaced.

Other emergency services: CSBG funds can also be used to support a range of other emergency services, such as clothing, household goods, or disaster relief through community networking, Second Chance Thrift Store and referrals.

    Community Educational Services and Events

It's important to note that CSBG programs are typically designed to provide short-term assistance to help people through a crisis, rather than ongoing support. The goal is to help people stabilize and get back on their feet so they can become self-sufficient.

They may directly connect you with a contact person at another agency ensuring a smoother transition and increasing the likelihood of successful enrollment.

LIEAP

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)

LIEAP assists eligible households with the cost of home heating through direct cash payments or payments to utility companies on their behalf. A crisis component is available for households without resources facing the loss of a heating source. Eligibility for both program components is based on a combination of factors, including income, type of heating payment, and total heating costs. The BFA Division of Family Assistance Policy (DFAP) operates LIEAP in each of the Department of Human Services (DoHS) field offices for a short time each winter, usually beginning with a mail-out to targeted households.
