What is Right From the Start?
West Virginia's Right From The Start (RFTS) program is a statewide initiative aimed at improving the health of mothers and babies by providing free home visits from registered nurses or licensed social workers. These care coordinators offer support, address concerns, and connect families with resources to create safe home environments. Eligibility generally requires being a pregnant West Virginia resident or having a child under one year old, along with holding a current Medicaid card or coverage through the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health, with specific provisions available for pregnant teens and some uninsured individuals.

What is Right from the Start?
West Virginia's Right From The Start (RFTS) program is a comprehensive, statewide initiative designed to enhance the health and well-being of mothers and their babies throughout the state. The core mission of RFTS is to support families during the critical early stages of a child's life, ensuring both mother and infant get a healthy start.

Right from the Start Eligibility
Eligibility for the Right From The Start program generally requires individuals to be residents of West Virginia who are either pregnant or have a child under the age of one. Additionally, participants usually need to possess a current, active Medicaid card or have medical coverage through the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health. Specific provisions may also extend eligibility to pregnant teenagers (19 or younger) without insurance, regardless of family income, and potentially to some uninsured individuals who were initially denied Medicaid.

Right from the Start Services
The primary service offered by the RFTS program involves free home visits conducted by qualified Designated Care Coordinators, who are typically registered nurses or licensed social workers. During these visits, the coordinators provide valuable support, address any concerns the family might have regarding the mother's or baby's health and development, and help connect them with necessary community resources, ultimately aiming to foster safe and nurturing home environments.
Want to Become a Provider?
A key component of the Right From the Start program is care coordination. This involves helping pregnant women and new mothers navigate the healthcare system, connect with resources (like WIC, transportation, housing assistance, smoking cessation programs), understand their health plan, schedule appointments, and follow up on care. The aim is to provide personalized support to ensure a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. Give us your email below and we will send you information on how to become a provider.
